A Lighthouse for the First Advent!

Wonderful Walk-in Advent Calendar with 24 Windows

I would love to share with you the tradition of Advent windows which is very popular in my home country. I’m happy to say that in Switzerland, it is still widespread in many regions!

The fun really starts when 24 lucky households are chosen to take part in this fantastic tradition. Each of these homes is given a number between one and twenty-four, and the challenge is to create an amazing Advent window with the corresponding number.

Mulled Wine and Hot Soup on the Opening Day

The excitement builds as the windows are lit up on the respective day. Some people even offer a small aperitif for visitors on the opening day of their window! And there’s more! Mulled wine for the adults and non-alcoholic punch for the children, plus something to nibble on, like Christmas biscuits or hot pea soup.

This is how a wonderful walk-in Advent calendar is created, with each window opening leading up to the big reveal at number 24!

Yearly Tradition in our Neighbourhood in Zurich

In our neighbourhood of Oerlikon in Zurich, the Advent windows are a yearly tradition. When the sun goes down, we love to head out and explore all the magical windows.

This year, I was particularly taken with number 1 – a lighthouse! It’s definitely my favourite.

A Lighthouse That Truly Thrives!

I discovered a very special lighthouse in the small Swiss town of Frauenfeld. It has a tree growing out of it, and its roots are connected to a smaller lighthouse. With his mural ‘The Mother Tree’, Belgian graffiti artist Gjis Vanhee wants to show us humans how we could solve our problems – if we worked together like the trees in a forest.
